What the system reads
On a turbine or large motor the probe sees shaft movement without touching the shaft. The small tip builds a field and the change shows as voltage. That signal runs through the cable to the proximitor card and then to the monitor. When the chain is clean you get a calm trace and the trips are fair. When the chain is dirty you get spikes and false alarms.

Probe assembly
The tip must face a clean and stable metal surface on the shaft. Keep the face parallel and the bracket rigid. The stainless body and armored entry help against heat and oil but still keep cooling air if the spot is very hot. Never touch the face with tools. Use plastic caps while routing the cable.
Best practice: use new lock nuts, add anti seize on threads if the OEM allows, mark the bracket and the body so you can see if the angle moved next month, and put a drip shield if oil spray is common.

Extension cable
The blue or cream cable must run away from high current trays. Tie it on a separate path with smooth radius. The braid and armor help but a poor route still picks noise. Keep the connector clean and fully seated. For long runs keep simple hand drawn route map inside the junction box so new staff can trace fast.
Avoid: joint by twisting, sharp bends near gland, sharing tray with VFD feeds, and wet conduit which fills with condensation.

Install and gap
Gap is the small distance from probe face to shaft. Set it with feeler gauge or dial per the manual of your monitor. After you set the gap write the value on the bracket with paint marker. Keep one sheet in the control room that lists all probe gaps by bearing number. That sheet pays back during a trip at night.
Life tips: use stainless stand off in hot zone, route so water cannot drip into conduit, do not bend armor tighter than the rule on the tag, and always keep a spare probe and cable for the critical bearing.

Common faults and fast checks
Check connector push in, check pins not bent, check proximitor fuse, try another channel with same probe.
Move cable away from VFD tray, check for moisture in conduit, check shield bonding only at one end.
Look for tight bend near gland, and check that the probe face is clean after last shutdown.
Bracket moved. Re set the gap and add a second lock nut or tab washer.
Add small guard around tip. Add flexible section to avoid hard vibration at the entry.
